Have you ever read a sentence that was so incredibly interesting, or mysterious, or thought-provoking, that you just had to keep reading? Starting with a hook sentence is one of the best ways to start your paragraph. It hooks your readers and leaves them wanting to learn more or it makes them wonder what comes next.
When you sit down to write, the hook is the first piece of the puzzle. Often, the hook is picked up from the introduction in the conclusion of the essay; this is called a FRAME. For example, if you begin by offering your readers a scenario related to your topic, you may offer part of the scenario in the beginning and finish it up in the end. Or, you may use key words that you refer back to in the conclusion.
Your TITLE can also be part of your hook. If your title is catchy, you can refer to key words in your introduction and/or conclusion. Referring back to your title and/or hook at the end of the conclusion is called "bringing an essay full circle." This is an effective writing technique.
